Agatha Christie and I go back to my teenage years (now retired), and I am so happy to be reading her again on my Kindle. I love pitting myself against Hercule Poirot. It's a classic whodunit, great plot...induction and deduction...no foul language and no gore. Great read!
I'm not a fan of short stories, but I just do not have the will power to pass up the opportunity to read, yet again, one of Agatha Christie's books....long or short! I love the humor that the rather pompous little Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, provides for the reader as he meticulously solves crimes. He is a bit unorthodox in his conclusions and does not give up until he solves his case. In this adventure Poirot receives a note requesting his presence at a time to be later disclosed. Who is this gentleman and why does he need the services of the great and famous Poirot? He is a bit put-off by the order; however, his curiosity takes over when he asks an acquaintance about the writer of the note. He is told the old gent is somewhat egotistical and a bit mad. Well, that piques Poirot's curiosity, and he decides that he will abide by the summons. He arrives at dinner time, but the guests seem quite surprised to have a stranger in their midst. But where is the gentleman who summoned the great little detective to his home? Keep your little gray cells busy and follow along with the great detective and see if you can solve the crime before Poirot. If one is an Agatha Christie fan, then this will be an enjoyable read; however, if one is looking for modern day blood, gore and mutilation scenes this will not measure up to those expectations. I love Ms. Christie's mysteries because they include a bit of suspense, mystery, humor and are just plain fun to read.
The skills of observation and putting the observed items into a story of how and who are the same for Hercule and Sherlock. The fact all the observed items are also available to the reader yet the reader can't solve the murder himself or herself create a mood of anticipation until the moment of unveiling so the reader can see the clues observed earlier and, "of course" now it all falls on place. "How come I didn't see that?
I have always liked mysteries and crime novels. I love Sherlock, Columbo, the Pink Panther series, and many many tv shows on the subject. Then recently someone told me to try Poirot. So I did. This was my first of his novels. I really liked it. So then I checked out the PBS series. Love it too.Ms. Christie writes in such a way that the characters just pop into life. I can picture the characters, hear their voices, and see their surroundings in all kinds of detail. And I found it to be a quick read.I liked it so much that I bought the complete collection of all the Poirot novels. Can't wait to get started on the next story.
Tightly wound and impeccable mystery set at an English country house. Family intrigue and a locked-door suicide/murder? Truly enjoyed it. Christie had a deft and precise hand. Well worth the price.
